Ja Rule Released From Prison, Still Has To Finish Serving Tax Evasion Sentence

a Rule was released from prison this morning, but has some time remaining on his 28-month sentence for tax evasion.

Ja Rule has been serving time in jail since his 2011 charge of possession of an illegal firearm, however, now the rapper is on the verge of freedom. Although his sentence was shortened for good behavior, he’s not done repaying his debt to society yet– after being released from prison he is going straight into federal custody for tax evasion charges.

The Murder Inc. rapper was escorted out of the Mid-State Correctional Facility this morning at 9:30 A.M., but it remains unclear where he will serve time for his tax case.

For tax evasion, Ja was supposed to serve a 28-month sentence which was set to run concurrently with his other sentence. It is reported that the rapper may only have six months left to serve for tax evasion, which he may possibly serve in a half-way house. Defense attorney Stacey Richman says that an order to pay back the $1.1 million in back taxes is one of the reasons why Ja is so anxious to be done with his legal problems and get back to work.

Ja Rule, who began serving time in June of 2011, is getting out at his earliest possible release date, according to state correction spokeswoman Linda Foglia. She says he was on his best behavior in prison, apart from two misbehavior reports for unauthorized phone calls, he had assignments on lawn and grounds crews, and participated in education programs.

XXL Presents: 20 Essential French Montana Mixtape Songs

New York finally has rap superstars in their corner. One half of our cover guys, French Montana, has been gearing the release of his Bad Boy debut Excuse My French for more than a year. After numerous setbacks, French has his sights on May 21 for the project. It’s been quite a long journey but the album looks to be on the way.

To mark the release of our March/April issue that hit newsstands yesterday, XXL wanted to dig way back to French’s early days. The Morocco-born, Bronx-raised rapper has built a reputation in the mixtape circuit, releasing more than 20 mixtapes catered to the streets. Of course, that means plenty of those tapes featured deep cuts with his former partner-in-rhyme Max B, his Coke Boys, various NY rappers and more. His catalogue is massive and marks the beginning of his rap career taking shape, from as early as 2007 to the Bad Boy signee we see today.

Lil Jon Partners With Zumba Fitness for New Single and Nightclub Series

Producer and rapper Lil Jon is planning on joining Zumba Fitness with a new single and nightclub series slated for April.

Pitbull and reggaeton singer Don Omar have already made efforts to producer their own signature tracks for the exercise brand. Lil Jon’s new single will be called “Work,” which will be sold on iTunes in March. It was performed at a fitness concert in L.A. that featured Pitbull and the co-founder of Zumba Beto Perez.

“Major names in music recognize that it’s good business to be with Zumba,” said Perez. “These artists are talented, write catchy music and they get people hooked.”

Lil Jon has dedicated himself to a healthy path as of late. He actively participates in Zumba because it helps him balance creating music that motivates people. “Work” is influenced by Brazilian, African and Latin sounds.

“Zumba is world-wide, respected and it’s about health,” said Lil Jon. “It’s something that you really didn’t expect from me. People have been blown away to find out that Zumba and I have partnered up.”

The nightclub series will go on sale February 22. It features Lil Jon and fitness instructor Gina Grant. The series will stop at four nightclubs on April 9, 10, 11 and 13 in Boston, Pittsburgh, Queens and Cincinnati.

Jay-Z Signs Roc Nation To Warner Music

« I ran through that buck fifty Live Nation fronted me/They workin’ on another deal, they talkin’ two hundred fifty!/I’m holdin’ out for three/Two seventy five and I just might agree.”

Nostradamus-type of prediction, maybe? According to Billboard, Jay and the (new) Roc signed “worldwide publishing administration deals with Warner/Chappell Music,” giving Jay the rights back to his music post-Def Jam (starting with The Blueprint 3, all the way to Watch The Throne) as well as future works, with most of his older catalog moving to the Warner umbrella within the year.

A separate deal will put the past and future catalogs of Roc Nation’s stable of artists on the publisher’s roster immediately, including songwriters Philip Lawrence (Bruno Mars, Flo Rida, Cee-Lo Green), S1 (Kanye West, Beyonce, 50 Cent), Carmen Key (Flo Rida, David Guetta), and British singer Rita Ora, among others. »
